Gene Baur, President and Co-Founder of Farm Sanctuary was recently interviewed on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The topic of conversation was Baur’s new book about pursuing a vegan lifestyle, Living the Farm Sanctuary Life. He provided some astounding facts about the negative impact the consumption of meat, fish, eggs and dairy products have on climate change, healthcare costs, water consumption and human and animal suffering.
What’s Jon Stewart’s take? He claims to have been a meat and potatoes fanatic who didn’t want to give much thought to the animal products on his plate. That changed once he started living with a couple of companion pigs and it became abundantly clear that they are individuals with complex social and emotional lives and a desire to feel pleasure and not pain. Still, he explains his struggles with bridging the dietary gap. On the one side, this eating mindfully and vegan seems to be the solution to nutrition, to health, to global warming, on the other side…corned beef. This is where Gene Baur’s book comes in. He suggests the tides are turning and there are more resources than ever to ease the transition to a plant-based diet. Yes, life without corned beef and all of its accompanying traditions may seem scary, but Gene Baur describes in his book not only helpful resources but the palate pleasure and peace of mind that comes with vegan cuisine and mindful eating.
