Vegan Chocolate Mousse

Smooth and Delicious

Craving a luscious dessert that satisfies your sweet tooth without compromising your dietary choices? Look no further than this recipe. It really is the Best Vegan Chocolate Mousse! This velvety-smooth, dairy-free delight is not only incredibly easy to whip up. Dive into the world of planet-friendly indulgence with this heavenly dessert.

Why Vegan Chocolate Mousse?

Traditional chocolate mousse recipes often rely on heavy cream and eggs for their creamy texture. In this recipe, these ingredients are swapped out for plant-based alternatives without sacrificing flavor or richness. By using simple, wholesome ingredients, I’ve created a dessert that’s not only better for you but also better for the planet.

Surprising Ingredient

You might wonder how a chocolate mousse can be smooth and creamy without dairy. The star of the show here is silken tofu. Not only does it provide the creamy texture, but it is also packed with nutrition. Calcium–set tofu offers a great source of protein, and calcium. When processed with some plant-based milk, melted vegan chocolate, vanilla, maple syrup and salt, it combines to create a simple yet sensational Vegan Chocolate Mousse.

Silken Tofu

In this recipe, silken tofu offers the texture you are looking for. You can find it in the refrigerator section of the supermarket or often in the Asian section. If the latter, it is sold in aseptic packaging and doesn’t need to be refrigerated.  Mori-Nu is one brand that sells this type of tofu.

Love Plant-based Desserts?

There are many reasons to love plant-based desserts. They’re dairy free. They’re always free from cholesterol. Plants simply don’t contain cholesterol, only animal foods do. Plant-based desserts are also lactose-free. If you are looking for another simple to make chocolate containing dessert, you might want to try these Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins.

Equipment

  • food processor

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces silken tofu
  • ½ cup unsweetened plant-based milk of your choice
  • cups dairy-free semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips I find the Guittard brand of chocolate melts particularly well
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 pint raspberries

Instructions

  • Remove the tofu from the package, drain excess water, and process in a food processor until smooth.
  • In a small saucepan, heat the milk over high heat until just boiling. Turn the heat down to low and add the chocolate chips. Stir until the chips are fully melted. Add the maple syrup and stir to combine. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  • Add the chocolate mixture and pinch of salt to the tofu in the food processor. Process until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula if necessary.
  • Divide the mousse into four serving bowls. Garnish with raspberries.

Notes

*Either the refrigerated or aseptically packaged version is fine. Mori-Nu brand makes a type that is not in the refrigerator section with other tofu products, but in the Asian section with soy sauces and curries.

** For a more intense dark chocolaty flavor, replace 1/4 cup of the semi-sweet chocolate chips with a 80-90% cocoa dark chocolate broken into bits.
